DuPont believes that the science is sufficient to compel prudent action to address global climate change. That is why we began taking action over 10 years ago, and have reduced our global greenhouse gas emissions by 72% versus 1990 levels.
Responding to climate change influenced by human activities represents a significant challenge that will require concerted global action by national governments. All major emitting nations will need to play a role. We believe there is an appropriate leadership role for the developed nations. We need to begin responding to this challenge now.
Given the scope of economic transformation required to first slow emissions growth and eventually make significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, policies must be carefully developed to ensure adequate reductions in an economically sustainable manner.
We believe such policies should include:
-
Actions in all sectors of the economy, with measures tailored to the economic conditions of the various sectors.
-
Incentives to reduce emissions of all of the greenhouse gases.
-
Measures to ensure economic efficiency, which is best achieved by harnessing the power of the market.
-
Recognition that there is no "silver bullet." Effective action will require a comprehensive suite of policies including energy efficiency, alternative energy and market measures such as cap and trade. Mandates, incentives and government support will all be required.
-
Provisions for near, mid- and long-term actions. We need to take such actions as current technology will allow in an economically sustainable way as we drive development of next generation technologies.
-
To encourage early voluntary actions those who make verifiable voluntary reductions in advance of requirements should be credited for those reductions.
-
Addressing climate change will require transforming how we produce and consume energy.
The role of science and technology development and diffusion, and governmental incentives and support for such efforts, are critical.
DuPont will continue to do its part, using our science to bring new products to market that help others reduce their emissions. These sustainable solutions include alternative energy sources such as photovoltaic solar cells and next generation biofuels, value-adding materials produced from agricultural feedstocks rather than petroleum like our DuPont™ Sorona® polymer fiber, and energy efficiency aids such as next generation refrigerants and DuPont™ Tyvek® HomeWrap®. Further progress on emissions reductions and adaptation to climate change will create new markets that we intend to serve as well.
DuPont will also continue to reduce its own greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, DuPont made a corporate commitment to acquire at least 10% of our power from renewable energy sources by 2010, and we are already more than halfway there. We have also committed to continue to hold our global energy use flat, as we have since 1990, through which we have achieved more than $3 billion in avoided costs due to energy conservation activities around the world.
Lastly, DuPont will play a constructive role in the development of public policies to address global climate change.
