The Cranfield Astrobiological Stratospheric Sampling Experiment (CASS•E) was designed to address concerns of the wider scientific community that any collected microorganisms in the stratosphere are unlikely to be ground-based contamination.
A key design feature for CASS•E is the use of DuPont™ Tyvek® as a biobarrier mechanism to maintain post-cleaning and dry heat microbial reduction levels of contamination of the sampling mechanism until barrier breaching in the stratosphere.
According to one of the CASS•E researchers, Clara Juanes - Vallejo of Cranfield University, “Tyvek® ensured our experiment was a complete success and we even got awarded finalists of Innovation Engineering and Technology UK awards for the best team.”
