DuPont™ Nomex® was first used by the military in 1965, when the U.S. Navy employed flight coveralls made from Nomex® brand fiber. Today, Nomex® fiber is an integral part of military flight suits, vehicle crewman coveralls, balaclavas, jackets and gloves. Its benefits are numerous. Inherently flame-resistant, fabric made of Nomex® will not continue to burn after the flame source is removed. It also creates an insulating barrier against the heat of a fire, slowing the transfer of heat and giving the wearer time to escape.
Through joint collaboration with the military in a variety of research programs, DuPont is continually researching new and innovative ways to enhance the protective applications of Nomex®.
Recent innovations include Nomex® Limitedwear for military – a lightweight limited-use garment that helps protect service men and women from the danger of fires, whether they are mechanics, in the infantry, or performing any task where the risk of flash fire exists.
In addition, current advancements have led to the integration of Nomex® fiber into the Multi-Climate Protection System (MCPS) developed by NAVAIR. Designed as a set of multi-layered garments, MCPS can be worn with flight suits and aviation gear to protect against fire, rain and snow.
