DuPont in Canada - Our Company

Company at a Glance

DuPont is a market-driven global science company focused on meeting the world’s needs through the power of our people, innovation, technology and collaboration.

Founded in 1802, our company has grown to 58,000 employees working at more than 210 sites in more than 90 countries around the globe.  Our vision is to be the world’s most dynamic science company, creating sustainable solutions essential to a better, safer, healthier life for people everywhere.  In 2009, we achieved $26.1 billion (USD) in sales.

Major societal changes, such as population growth, are creating four significant needs that we see as megatrends, including increasing food production, decreasing dependence on fossil fuels, protecting people, assets and our environment and supporting growth in emerging markets.  Today, thousands of DuPont employees are collaborating with stakeholders and partners – including customers, governments and communities – to meet these complex challenges that will define the coming decades.

We use our unmatched science and collaboration to create game-changing sustainable solutions to address these megatrends.  For example, we are committed to working closely with farmers around the world to significantly increase corn and soybean yields over the next decade with seeds that are higher yielding, more drought tolerant, more nitrogen-use efficient and more resistant to insects and disease.  Similarly, to decrease dependence on fossil fuels, we offer products that help improve energy efficiency in building construction, and provide lightweight solutions in the transportation industries, and a growing suite of solutions across alternative energy applications, including biofuels and photovoltaics.

DuPont’s 13 businesses are aligned to increase our speed and effectiveness in meeting customer needs.  They include:
• Applied BioSciences
• Building Innovations
• Chemicals & Fluoroproducts
• Crop Protection
• Electronics & Communications
• Nutrition & Health
• Packaging & Industrial Polymers
• Performance Coatings
• Performance Polymers

Innovation is a critical component of our efforts.  We have more than 8,500 scientists and engineers working at over 75 research and development centres around the world.  In 2009, DuPont spent $1.4 billion on R&D.  During the year, DuPont launched more than 1,400 new products and filed more than 2,000 U.S. patents.  We also expanded our global R&D presence with the opening of two new labs in Brazil and China.  This year, new labs focusing on photovoltaics research were opened in Switzerland and the U.S.

We are guided in all we do by an unwavering commitment to our core values of safety and health, environmental stewardship, highest ethical behaviour and respect for people.  Our goal is to have “zero” core value incidents.

DuPont was one of the first companies to publicly establish environmental goals 20 years ago.  Since then, we have broadened our sustainability commitments beyond internal footprint reduction.  We now also focus on market-driven targets for research and development investment, as well as revenue. The goals are tied directly to business growth, specifically to the development of safer and environmentally improved new products for key global markets.
DuPont in Canada

In Canada, we trace our roots back more than 130 years.  We’re building our future success on this foundation to grow our business and increase our contribution to Canadian society, our customers and the economy.  DuPont in Canada accounts for about three percent of DuPont’s global sales ($26.1 billion in 2009) by geography.

Our Canadian operations span the country and include six manufacturing facilities at five sites (Sarnia, Ajax, Kingston and Maitland, Ontario, and Thetford Mines, Quebec), a state-of-the art research and business development centre in Kingston, Ontario, and three advanced refinish customer training sites located in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia.  We also collaborate actively with a number of Canadian universities.

Pioneer Hi-Bred, a DuPont company, has operations across Canada.  Its Canadian head office is located in Chatham, Ontario.  Its operations include sales and administration offices, research centres, and seed production facilities in Chatham, Georgetown and Ridgetown, Ontario, and Lethbridge, Alberta.  Pioneer is the world’s leading developer and supplier of advanced plant genetics to farmers.

Our more than 1,300 employees in Canada combine their enthusiasm and skills with the power of global DuPont to enable our Canadian customers to successfully compete and lead in domestic and global markets.  Many of our people are involved in global company networks and teams, have opportunities to work in other regions and participate in various industry associations.

DuPont has a strong community commitment, such as through our long-standing support for the United Way.  Our employees are also active community volunteers in a range of organizations.  A company recognition program recognizes employees for their volunteer work, and provides funding for their community organizations.
