In DuPont Canada, we work across our value chains to improve sustainability. We get to know our customers and their businesses. We combine this understanding of customer needs with our scientific and technological expertise to come up with solutions that will improve our customers’ sustainability – including increasing their competitive advantage.
In some ways DuPont began its Sustainable Growth journey in the 1930’s when we made our first statement on environmental responsibility.
In the 1970s, DuPont established our first environmental policy with the commitment that the company would be in compliance with all laws and regulations.
In the 1980s, DuPont learned the importance of aligning environmental performance with public expectations. In 1989, our CEO introduced us to the term “Corporate Environmentalism” and setting goals for DuPont that went well beyond compliance to include things like a 90 percent reduction in air carcinogens and a 70 percent reduction in air toxics.
In the 1990s, our DuPont Board of Directors challenged leadership to update our environmental policy. DuPont worked with a number of organizations on what became our Safety, Health, and Environmental Commitment. It committed us to the goal of zero injuries, illnesses, incidents, waste, emissions, and use of depletable forms of raw material and energy. While we are still not at zero in any of these areas, the goal represents a target that continues to drives organization every day.
In the 2000s, the company identified key market trends and business opportunities to help customers and consumers improve their environmental footprint. DuPont committed to a new set of goals, many of which aligned business success with offering sustainable solutions.
