DuPont is committed to serving the needs of the automotive industry. It's our biggest customer. We have been a major player in the industry since 1910, when DuPont supplied coated fabrics for "rag tops."
Today, DuPont supplies everything from the paints that beautify a car's exterior to the refrigerants, fibers and vinyls that make the interior comfortable, as well as the plastics and electronics that keep things running smoothly under the hood.
DuPont products that support auto safety include the nylon used in airbags and the laminates such as DuPont™ Butacite® and DuPont™ SentryGlas® that keep windows from shattering.
DuPont revolutionized vehicle manufacturing in 1924 with fast-drying Duco nitrocellulose lacquer, the first sprayable automotive topcoat. Before Duco, it took 336 hours - in other words, 14 days - to paint one car. Duco cut painting time from weeks to just hours.
These days, DuPont supplies the finishes for one of every two cars produced in Europe and for nearly half of those produced in Canada and Mexico. In the United States, DuPont finishes were used on nine of the 10 top-selling vehicles in 2001.
