Groundbreaking System Capitalizes on Benefits from Both Cyrel® FAST and Cyrel® Round Technology
DuPont Packaging Graphics is demonstrating DuPont™ Cyrel® FAST round, the company’s sleeve imaging system designed to expand the capabilities of flexographic package printing at drupa 2008, Hall 8B, Stand B23. Incorporating both Cyrel® FAST and Cyrel® round technology, Cyrel® FAST round is an easy-to-use equipment and print form combination that eliminates solvents, delivers a continuous flexo form for high-quality precision printing and offers rapid turnaround times for improved productivity.
The system includes the Cyrel® FAST round thermal processor, the Cyrel® Digital Imager (CDI) Advance Cantilever from EskoArtwork, and a new family of Cyrel® FAST sleeves. Suitable for use with alcohol-based, water-based and UV flexographic ink systems, the sleeves are designed to provide silky-smooth texture and superior image reproduction.
“Cyrel® FAST round is a cutting-edge product that builds on the qualities of its predecessors and adds a wealth of features that we believe will take flexographic package printing to a completely new level,” said Lisa DiGate, global business director, DuPont Packaging Graphics. “This system will offer brand owners an attractive alternative to gravure because it allows tradeshops and converters to create stunning graphics, respond quickly to frequent design changes and improve speed to shelf, a must in these days of short product life cycles.”
High-quality flexible packaging is a natural fit with Cyrel® FAST round, and it is ideally suited to projects requiring continuous design repeats or complex nested mounting. The system performs well with flexible packaging and folding carton substrates as well as materials with varying thicknesses like tissue and wallpaper.
This clean, solvent-free technology allows just-in-time imaging on seamless photopolymer sleeves for the first time. The Cyrel® FAST round system delivers highly precise registration, eye-catching print quality and plate access time of less than one hour for four photopolymer sleeves. Using an easy two-step process, the Cyrel® FAST sleeve mask is ablated by the Cyrel® Digital Imager (CDI) Advance Cantilever laser and thermally developed in the solvent-free Cyrel® FAST round equipment.
Small enough to slip into any tradeshop, printing or converting facility, the new solvent–free thermal developer is a compact 360cm wide, 130cm deep and 210cm high (914” x 325” x 533”). The ergonomic design provides easy access to all controls and allows for quick changeover from one sleeve diameter or thickness to another.
Although designed primarily to outperform other continuous print forms, Cyrel® FAST round sleeves also provide an effective alternative to mounted flat plates for demanding, tight register jobs and those brought back to press multiple times. Compared to a printing plate, a sleeve is always imaged and processed in the correct position, resulting in highly accurate registration. And from a printing standpoint, the advantages of thermal processing will apply to the Cyrel® round sleeves as well, i.e. longer print life and quicker color make-ready, which are attributed to the print form height uniformity inherent in solvent-free processing.
The Cyrel® FAST round system features four patented technologies to produce finished printing forms with excellent printing properties that meet the real world demands of the package printing industry:
- The unique ‘loose fit’ beam to accommodate the broad variety of sleeve diameters;
- The heating systems optimized for high processing speeds and low energy consumption;
- The hydraulic system that applies the right amount of pressure to the printing form and the thermal developer roll;
- The thermal developer processing medium that removes the liquefied non-imaged area from the photopolymer sleeve.
Three units, two in Europe and one in North America, are currently in operation, and the Cyrel® FAST round system will be fully commercialized in 2009. The demonstration system generated continuous interest on the booth during drupa 2008, resulting in a number of signed orders and letters of intent.
