A seminar was held in Verona on Thursday 6 April at the "San Zeno" Scuola Grafica Cartaria [Graphic School] (http://www.scuolagraficasanzeno.com).

It was attended by over 120 specialists representing around 75 companies in the graphics, pre-printing and print sector.

The high quality that distinguishes labels produced with narrow web flexo printing machines can now also be obtained on flexible packaging film printed with wide web presses. This was the gist of the technical seminar entitled "The ideal workflow" which dealt with the subjects of learning and training within the general development plan of technologies for flexographic printing. Besides the Scuola Grafica Cartaria "San Zeno", Esko, DuPont and Uteco also took part in the seminar.

According to Tiziano Zanotti, director of the Scuola Grafica Cartaria "San Zeno", who gave the opening welcome to the seminar, and Mirko Salzani, responsible for the packaging project at San Zeno who presented the theory of "The ideal workflow" in flexo packaging printing, professional training for young people is a must, as is continuous updating for entrepreneurs and the self-employed.

Pier Luigi Sassanelli, Marketing Communications and Brand Manager of DuPont Packaging Graphic Europe MEA, commented: "The close collaboration between the Graphic School, Esko, DuPont, GIDUE and Uteco has led to a practical demonstration that Cyrel® FAST plates and innovative flexo technologies have crossed yet another barrier. Cross printing tests have confirmed the high quality that can be obtained by printing labels with narrow web flexo printing presses and on film for flexible packaging printed with wide web presses. The DuPont™ Cyrel® FAST digital flexo plates prepared with Esko software and imaged with the Cyrel® Digital Imager (CDI) can guarantee a high level of quality with both technologies."

The aim of the seminar was to provide sector operators with updated information on training, technologies, trends and economic aspects. Its objective was to motivate change and to improve how pre-printing and printing production activities are seen and implemented.

Goliardo Butti from Esko described the front-end solutions and the most advanced systems for the ablation of flexo plates with CTP Flexo, giving a detailed account of the latest innovations in the field of pre-press and the high levels of quality achieved.

Mario Castelli from DuPont presented the attributes of photopolymers for flexography and explained how the quality of flexo printing in the tag and label sector could be enhanced with the thermal technology Cyrel® FAST, now also available for the preparation of plates for flexible packaging printing.

GIDUE S.p.A. showed some samples of UV flexographic printing produced especially for this seminar, in close collaboration with technical staff from DuPont and Esko. The very high print quality obtained confirmed how partnerships between suppliers are a determining factor in fully exploiting the potential of flexographic printing.

Giuseppe Tripaldi from Uteco Converting S.p.a. explained how flexography reached today’s quality, previously the prerogative of narrow web printing presses, and how a manufacturer of wide web printing presses intends to profit from the acquired experience.

At the conclusion of the seminar, all participating companies were given a kit containing the print tests and all the technical specifications of the equipment used to reach the levels of quality shown with graphics printed on labels as well as on packaging film.

The project presented by the Scuola Grafica Cartaria "San Zeno" thus outlined flexographic printing’s new objective positioning.
