Application Description


DuPont ™ Surlyn® Provides Hermetic Seals, Preserves Freshness of Bauducco Cake

A coex film of low density polyethylene (LDPE) and Surlyn® laminated to metallized PET is used in a multilayer structure for ready-to-eat cakes. The package is gas flushed to preserve quality and improve the shelf life of the cake.

Materials Selected and Why
Originally, linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) was used in this application; however, the low hot-tack strength of LLDPE made it unable to withstand gas flushing. It also required lower line speeds. Surlyn® 1652SB was chosen to replace LLDPE due to its good adhesion to the LDPE in the coex film and because it has high hot-tack strength, which prevents seal failure after gas flushing.  In addition, Surlyn® provides excellent sealing performance –- even through grease or particulate (sugar) contamination -- and its lower seal-initiation temperature enables increased line speeds.
