Application Description

Skin Packaging made with DuPont™ Surlyn®
film Puts the Brakes on Consumer Tampering and Prevents Paint Chipping
Retail skin packaging
Street-performance Raybestos® brand BRUTESTOP™ brake pads are placed on an E-flute corrugated board that has a preprinted four-color coated liner displaying the company's logo. Ten-mil film of Surlyn® holds the pads securely to the board. A Zed Auto Skin-Trim (AST) machine trims and perforates the finished packages simultaneously. The board is creased along two perforations. The "wings" formed by the folded board hold the finished package snugly inside a colorful corrugated carton that further protects the product.
Benefits Gained
  • Increased tamper resistance.
  • Improved appearance.
  • Enhanced protection to prevent the gold paint on the brake pads from chipping.
Materials Selected and Why
Different types of packaging were considered, but skin packaging with film of Surlyn® was selected because it could provide distinct advantages, including enhanced consumer appeal, superior product protection and outstanding tamper resistance.
End User:  Brake Parts, Inc., a division of Echlin Corporation – Branford, Connecticut
