Nomex® and Kevlar®

For 40 years, DuPont has been committed to helping protect firefighters and other first responders with science-based innovations such as Nomex® and Kevlar® brand fibers, non-woven substrates, protective finishes and chem./bio membranes.  DuPont™ Nomex® and Kevlar® provide proven protection, durability and comfort from the inside out.  70% of your turnout's thermal protection comes from the inner components of DuPont™ Nomex® and Kevlar®.

Look for the Brand Preferred labels to insure your products are manufactured to the highest standards by a member of the Brand Preferred Program.

The Outer Shell
DuPont™ Nomex® and Kevlar® fibers and filament yarns are engineered together with other high temperature fibers to form materials that stand up to heat, stay strong and protect the inner components.  Kevlar® filament is engineered into premium fabrics to reduce fabric profile while strengthening fabrics to new levels of performance.  Durable DuPont™ Teflon® HT water repellant treatments help keep the gear lighter and prevent water from compromising valuable air layers that provide the bulk of the garments' thermal insulation.

The Moisture Barrier
Nomex® fabrics and Nomex® E89™ have been chosen by the most trusted and reliable moisture barrier manufacturers to provide strong flame resistant substrates for their liquid impermeable films.  The moisture barrier offers protection against the intrusion of water, chemicals and viral agents.  These barriers are also breathable, which allows metabolic heat to escape and helps reduce the overall heat stress during strenuous activities.

The Thermal Liners
Nomex® and Kevlar® fiber batts and Nomex® E89™ non-wovens are combined with Nomex® fiber and filament face cloths to provide durable, flexible, heat insulating components.  Multi-layer Nomex® E89™ based thermal liners are among the thinnest, most flexible, most breathable components on the market.  Face cloths using Nomex® filament yarns help reduce surface friction, improving overall garment mobility.  Water wicking or repellant finishes on individual layers improves moisture management and reduces garment-drying time.

Nomex® Stationwear

When you’re fighting the heat and flames of a fire, or at the station waiting for the next call to come in, you — and your family — need to know that you are safe and protected from the extreme hazards you face every day. Wearing Nomex® Stationwear provides the superior thermal protection you need from the inside out.

Although Stationwear is typically worn under turnout gear, there are cases — flash fires, for example — when it may be the only protection you have on at that time. And, should these accidents occur, Nomex® Stationwear is a viable alternative to polyester/cotton blends. Inherently flame-resistant Nomex® brand fiber will not melt, drip or support combustion in the air when exposed to extreme heat and flame. In fact, in simulated flash fire exposure tests Nomex® Stationwear and poly/cotton Stationwear blends, cotton Stationwear ignited and burned. In the same exposure, Nomex® Stationwear did not burn, and the predicted burn injury was reduced by 50%. Nomex® Stationwear is also compliant with NFPA 1975, Standard on Station/Work Uniforms for Fire and Emergency Services; poly/cotton Stationwear, which melts when exposed to intense heat and flame, is not.

Nomex® Stationwear also addresses your needs for protective apparel that is comfortable and will maintain its professional look over the course of time. Because Nomex® Stationwear is lightweight and offers excellent breathability, it helps reduce the threat of heat stress, which can cause fatigue, disorientation and heat exhaustion on the fireline. And, unlike cotton fabrics, Nomex® Stationwear can be washed up to 125 times without losing its shape. Further, it does not need to be ironed to maintain its crisp, professional appearance.

EMS Wear of Nomex®
Nomex® EMS Wear provides excellent thermal protection from flash fire hazards often encountered at accident scenes. It also incorporates protection from blood and body fluid-borne pathogens and protection against many hazardous chemicals. This is the first time this protection combination has been made available in EMS apparel. This protection, coupled with the comfort of knowing they are safer from potential on-site hazards such as flash fires, enables EMS professionals to focus on what’s important: saving lives.

Because the outershell of Nomex® EMS Wear is inherently flame-resistant, it will improve the thermal performance of the entire garment. Nomex® EMS Wear will give EMS professionals the valuable seconds – and FR protection – they need when extracting someone from an accident site should a sudden flash fire occur. This is in sharp contrast to polyester or nylon outershells, which offer no FR protection and will ignite, melt and drip if exposed to the extreme heat and flames of a flash fire.

Nomex® EMS Wear coat has multiple components. The breathable outershell uses the same technology found in most firefighters’ turnout gear today, but is lighter. The outershell is water- and wind-resistant and made with durable, woven fabrics of DuPont™ Nomex® brand fiber; the inner layer includes a liquid impermeable film that provides protection against blood, body fluids, water and common chemicals. This lightweight, flame-resistant garment is specifically designed to meet the demands of EMS professionals, provide mobility and offer valuable peace-of-mind against the risks they face.

Durable Nomex® EMS Wear can take the on-the-job rigors of emergency apparel wear, as well as the washing and care needed when EMS personnel return to the station.
