DuPont Fluoroproducts Introduces Extended Range of Tedlar® Films for Photovoltaic Module Manufacturing

New Backsheet Materials Increase Module Efficiency and Lifetime

DuPont Fluoroproducts introduces DuPont™ Tedlar® PV2100 Series polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) films, part of an extended line of Tedlar® PVF films used in the protective backsheets of photovoltaic (PV) modules. DuPont™ Tedlar® PV2100 Series PVF films provide enhanced backsheet dimensional stability and higher reflectance when compared to other products within the DuPont family of films.

The introduction represents the latest addition to a broad and growing portfolio of integrated materials and technologies for the photovoltaic (PV) industry from DuPont.

DuPont™ Tedlar® PVF films have established themselves as the standard for weatherable backsheets for PV modules, due to their excellent strength, UV resistance and moisture barrier properties. Most commonly, the backsheet is constructed as a trilaminate of polyester film between two layers of Tedlar® film, often referred to as a TPT™ backsheet. The application of a film from the Tedlar® PV2100 Series results in a TPT™ backsheet with much better dimensional stability, helping module makers prevent wrinkling problems during vacuum lamination. The improved tear strength and abrasion resistance properties mean that the new films are tougher than their predecessors. As with all Tedlar® photovoltaic films, the Tedlar® PV2100 Series also exhibits long-term resistance to UV exposure, helping to preserve the module’s integrity. Finally, the new series of films offers higher reflectance, which increases module output and efficiency.

"As the global demand for photovoltaic energy continues to increase, DuPont is well positioned to help cell and module makers specify the most efficient, high-performing photovoltaic materials," said Hilde Roekens, global segment leader -- DuPont Fluoroproducts. "The Tedlar® PV2100 Series is another important example of how we are innovating to increase the life of solar modules, improve productivity and, ultimately, continue to make solar power a more viable alternative energy option."

In addition to enhanced performance, the Tedlar® PV2100 Series also provides improved aesthetics, such as an enhanced surface finish for a smooth glossy appearance, which improves the attractiveness of TPT™ backsheets, as well as a wider variety of colors to expand the possibility of integrating PV modules into architectural applications.

The new Tedlar® PV2100 Series and other DuPont Photovoltaic Solutions materials will be part of the DuPont exhibit at the 21st European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition, September 4-8, 2006 in Dresden, Germany.
