The most popular backsheet construction is a “sandwich” of Mylar® PET polyester film between two layers of DuPont™ Tedlar®. This trilaminate is commonly referred to as TPT™.

The following properties make Mylar® polyester film the ideal candidate for the TPT™ laminate:

  • Water vapor barrier.
  • Electrical insulation.
  • Dimensional stability.
  • Ease of handling.
  • "Cut-through" and tear resistance.

Mylar® is available in a range of thicknesses from 50 microns (2 mil) up to 250 microns (10 mil) for this application area.

Future Developments Heat stabilized Melinex® PET polyester film and Teonex® PEN polyester film will have an important role in tomorrow’s flexible solar cells due to their ability to be processed at higher temperatures.

The diagram below compares the properties of heat stabilized Melinex® and heat stabilized Teonex®.

Properties of heat stablized Teonex and Melinex

Film selection is dependant on the performance of a film at a given temperature. Heat stabilized Teonex® PEN polyester film can be processed at higher temperatures than heat stabilized Melinex® PET polyester films.
