Our View: Tedlar® Supply Outlook
What factors are driving demand for Tedlar®?
Increased utilization of solar energy around the world is driving the overall need for solar cells and modules, which, in turn, increases demand for photovoltaic (PV) materials that extend module longevity and enhance module performance, such as DuPont™ Tedlar® polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) film.
How and why is Tedlar® film used in solar modules?
DuPont™ Tedlar® PVF is part of the backsheet for the solar module. It protects modules from unwanted effects of moisture and UV light for the life of their warrantees. Tedlar® is unaffected by extreme temperature and humidity, and has excellent electrical, durability, and barrier properties.
Tedlar® film has been the preferred choice for solar cell and module manufacturers, and is the only film that has been successfully protecting PV modules for more than 25 years.
How is DuPont planning to meet increased demand for Tedlar®?
Meeting the needs of the fast-growing photovoltaic solar energy market is a priority for DuPont Photovoltaic Solutions. We are making important capacity expansions that are critical to supporting the growth in this industry. Since 2006, DuPont has announced investments of $365 million in Tedlar® capacity. These announcements are associated with the following investments:
- Approximately $50 million expansion of polymer production and Tedlar® PV2100 film production in 2007;
- A $20 million expansion of monomer production and PV 2100 film production in 2008;
- A $120 million expansion of monomer and polymer and PV2000 film production in 2009, and;
- $175 million to complete the multi-phase expansion of its high-performance DuPont™ Tedlar® PV2001 series oriented film production line at Cricleville in 2010.
The multi-phase expansion of monomer, polymer and film will enable the increase of capacity and availability of Tedlar® film by 50 percent, compared to current capacity.
What kind of Tedlar® film will be produced as part of this capacity expansion?
DuPont supports, and will continue to support the PV market with Tedlar® PV2000 and PV2100 series films. Both film grades provide the performance characteristics that the industry demands of Tedlar® - durability, UV resistance, and good adhesion to encapsulants.
