Photovoltaic Solutions

Encapsulating films made from DuPont™ Surlyn® PV ionomer resins have been used in photovoltaic applications for more than 15 years. Performance features include:

  • Excellent optical properties
  • Toughness
  • Strength
  • Chemical resistance
  • UV resistance
  • High polarity
  • No additional curing during lamination

These performance benefits relate to Surlyn® PV resins' ion content, a product of DuPont polymer science involving the presence of metal salts (such as zinc or sodium) during resin manufacture. Resulting ions, locked inside the polymer, add to its adhesiveness and toughness, enabling extrusion into plasticizer-free films or sheets that can deliver improved long-term clarity, impact resistance, dimensional stability, weather resistance and other PV advantages. Processing steps are similar to those for traditional encapsulants, but without the need for curing agents; this feature also contributes to the shelf life and performance consistency of encapsulants made with Surlyn® PV resins.
