Tuff Seals chooses Viton® fluoroelastomer for tough oil seal duty

Rear hub oil seals of DuPont™ Viton® fluoroelastomer compression molded to metal, manufactured by Tuff Seals of India, provide lifetime sealing of aggressive lubricants at temperatures of 135°C and above in heavy-duty trucks, trailers, tippers and buses.
Following extensive endurance testing, Tuff Seals PVT Ltd., a leading oil seal and bearing manufacturer based in the Indian steel city of Jamshedpur, has chosen DuPont™ Viton® fluoroelastomer to secure superior high temperature performance for rear hub oil seals fitted to 10+ wheel dumper trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles, in replacement of nitrile rubber (NBR).
Rear hub oil seals have a tough job to perform—particularly in heavy commercial vehicles such as trucks, trailers, tippers and buses. They play a key role in rear hub assemblies by sealing the clearance gap between rotating shafts and bearings, keeping hot and aggressive lubricants in, and dirt, dust, water and other corrosive and abrasive substances out. These vital seals must operate under extremes of load, terrain and temperature for the lifetime of the vehicle.
Viton® and the 'wow' factor
Viton® molded to metal has proved to be the long-term performance solution for the new series of Tuff Seals inner and outer hub oil seals. The DuPont fluoroelastomer has an operating temperature capability well over 150°C—significantly above the application design requirement of 135°C—and exceptional resistance to chemicals and fluids.
"For approval of these seals the acceptance criteria for each test was critical. We have gone through all endurance tests of each seal at various temperatures and conditions. We successfully conducted the entire range of 'wow' (worst of the worst) sample and nominal samples testing. Since then, our customers using these seals have had absolutely no problems," said R. N. Choudhary, Managing Director of Tuff Seals Pvt. Ltd.
"Selection of material, grades, lip design, and mould and process design were very important considerations in the development of these seals," he added.
