New DuPont™ Vamac® Products Extend Performance, Processibility to Meet Market Need for Cost-Effective Materials that Improve Component Performance
DuPont Packaging & Industrial Products launches DuPont™ Vamac® Ultra ethylene acrylic elastomers, a new family of higher performance elastomers that greatly enhances the performance AND processibility of the standard grades of heat and oil-resistant Vamac® ethylene acrylic elastomers.
Based on a proprietary manufacturing process that optimizes the molecular structure of Vamac®, the new Vamac® Ultra series comprises several new product grades with enhanced properties that extend the performance of existing Vamac® grades in several directions.
“This breakthrough in the product’s foundation results from several years of R&D efforts aimed at meeting marketplace request for a new generation of Vamac® grades that significantly improve customer processing limitations while providing higher levels of performance,” said Doug King, DuPont™ Vamac® global product line manager. “Early tests with customers in the development phase indicate that the products from this process exceed their expectations.”
The first new product in the portfolio – Vamac® Ultra IP – can vastly improve a users’ productivity through reduced mold fouling, scrap, improved hot tear resistance and cycle time compared with core Vamac® G product. With higher viscosity, Ultra IP provides superior compound dispersion with a 1-pass mix and extruded profile stability. At the same time Vamac® Ultra IP delivers improved high temperature properties for improved vacuum collapse resistance and tensile strength of low hardness compounds with improved heat/oil aging performance for today’s hotter, more aggressive operating environments.
The new product family also debuts with Vamac® Ultra LT, designed to help automakers meet new and emerging needs for cost-effective, lower-emission powertrain systems, according to Ulrich Hevelke, DuPont™ Vamac® Ultra LT project leader. Vamac® Ultra LT delivers low temperature flexibility down to - 40C and lower in service with fewer performance-draining plasticizers, especially for use in automotive hoses and boots as well as dampers where functional performance is required throughout a thermal range as wide as -40C to 160C. Ultra LT can also be blended with other Vamac® ethylene acrylic elastomers to improve low temperature performance in place of plasticizers in static applications such as powertrain seals & gaskets.
