DuPont Performance Polymers adds a new DuPont™ Zytel® PLUS nylon resin and two Zytel® HTN PPA resins to its breakthrough family of products designed to provide the kind of long-term protection against aggressive environments that can — at minimum — double the life of a component. Based on DuPont™ SHIELD Technology, the new resins will stand up to long-term exposure to hot oil, calcium chloride, impact after aging and temperatures as high as 230°C.
These new polymers, introduced at K-2010 in Düsseldorf, Germany, further enable the auto industry to adopt lightweight plastics and eliminate metal while helping to ensure that components will last the service life of the vehicle.
The new resins include:
- DuPont™ Zytel® PLS 95G40DH1T nylon — Designed specifically to meet existing aluminum stone impact and heat-and oil-aging requirements, Zytel® PLS 95G40DH1T outperforms traditional nylons on the market today to help ensure a component such as an exhaust muffler or oil pan withstands impact from gravel and road debris, while maintaining critical sealing function. In addition, new Zytel® PLS 95G40DH1T shows virtually no drop off in performance despite 5000 hours exposure to 150°C hot oil, making it attractive for other hot-oil applications, such as transmission pans, oil filter modules, rocker covers and many transmission applications.
- Two new Zytel® HTN92 Series PPA (polyphthalamide) resins — As the first PPA resins enhanced with SHIELD Technology, these new grades continue to deliver performance a step above non-aromatic polyamides — after 1000 hours at 230°C air oven aging, the strength of HTN92 series is twice that of standard PPA resin, and 20-25 percent higher than PPS resins.

"The need for a family of long-life, high-heat, chemically resistant materials has never been stronger as the auto industry drives to cut weight and cost to meet new fuel consumption and emissions standards around the world," said Patrick Ferronato, global marketing director — DuPont Automotive Performance Polymers. "Today's engines create more demanding environments and each component and system faces a different formulation of "chemical cocktail" or a different load at temperature — one material can't do it all."
These and the existing four Zytel® PLUS nylon polymers launched in April are aimed at automotive engine and oil system applications that face exposure to high temperatures for extended time periods, such as: charge air coolers, exhaust mufflers, turbo air ducts, engine mounts, resonators, cylinder head covers, oil pans, EGR

coolers, oil modules, thermostats, transmission components — such as front covers — and radiator end tanks where calcium chloride resistance is especially important due to road treatments.
"Initial response to Zytel® PLUS nylon is exceptional; it was specified for commercial programs within four months of its introduction," said Ferronato. "We expect a similar and strong reception for the Zytel® HTN92 Series PPA resins — they uniquely combine durability with excellent temperature, chemical and moisture resistance, and respond to the need for lightweight materials that can withstand today’s more intense underhood environments.” |
The seven commercial products and one developmental grade in the portfolio credit SHIELD Technology, only from DuPont for their ability to withstand long-term exposure to heat and chemicals.
DuPont™ SHIELD Technology combines several innovations, including a new polymer backbone, polymer modifications and a special set of additives, to enhance many performance characteristics. The exact combination and composition of chemistries are tailored for each product based on the targeted application.
