Christopher S. Murphy has been named DuPont global automotive industry director to further facilitate industry collaboration aimed at reducing dependence on fossil fuels and lowering emissions.
Murphy, who recently held a similar position in the Americas, is charged to lead global account teams across the 13 DuPont businesses and to connect with customers and industry associations as a means of accelerating innovations.

"The pressure to develop fuel-efficient vehicles that are both affordable and appealing is intense and exciting," said Murphy. "While materials science lies at the heart of innovation, strategic and global customer engagement is critical to ensure the solutions deliver sustainable results."
DuPont in the last year has sharpened its focus in automotive as a result of increased demand for science-based solutions that are sustainable. While there are a number of mid- and long-term R&D programs taking place around the world to support the initiative to lower emissions and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, some active, cost-effective, fuel-saving programs include:
- high-performance plastics and composites in turbochargers used to boost performance in downsized engines and to replace metals, reducing vehicle weight;
- high-performance materials to reduce rolling resistance in tires and friction in moving parts to improve the vehicle's efficiency;
- development of advanced battery materials and chemistries to improve performance.
Additionally, DuPont this year invested in new automotive centers in India, Korea and China to complement the existing facilities in North America, Europe and Japan. DuPont last year launched more than 1,700 new products and invested 22 percent of its $1.7 billion R&D budget on developing new chemistry and materials to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Murphy joined DuPont in 1986 and has held a number of business and marketing management positions primarily in support of the automotive industry. Prior to his current position, Murphy served as director of strategic planning.
