Transfer device for the handicapped

Case Study Image

Application Description

The BeasyTrans™ Easy Transfer System allows caregivers to move people between wheelchair and bed, auto seat, etc., using an easy guide-and-glide technique.

The device has a board and seat injection molded of Minlon® mineral-reinforced nylon resin. The board, measuring 40 by 12 by 1 in. (102 by 30 by 3 cm), has an integrally molded slot and track in the center. The seat, a flat, round part, 12 in. (30 cm) in diameter, glides along the track and can rotate freely. The seat is fitted with a polyethylene glide ring and is secured to the board track by a nut injection molded of Delrin® acetal resin.

Benefits Gained

Smooth transfer. The unit's functional, ergonomic design minimizes discomfort to the handicapped person and eases the caregiver's task.

Portable. Thanks to the high strength-to-weight ratio of Minlon®, the BeasyTrans can handle loads up to 375 lbs, according to Brantman, yet weighs only 6.5 lbs. Unlike heavy hydraulic lifts, it can accompany the wheelchair user practically anywhere, adding new mobility to the patient's lifestyle.

Materials Selected and Why

Board and seat. Minlon®, based on nylon with mineral and glass reinforcements, provides high strength and stiffness, low warp, resistance to strong cleaners and disinfectants, and high productivity in injection molding.

Seat nut. Delrin®, incorporating Teflon® fluoropolymer powder in its acetal homopolymer matrix, combines good lubricity, low wear and the balance of mechanical properties needed.
