Maintenance tips to help you manage your swimming pool water quality

These swimming pool maintenance tips will help you manage your pool water quality all season long.

1. Estimate your pool size.

Before you can determine the correct dosage of any product, it is important to know how much water your pool holds. This is known as the pool volume. Below are equations that can be used to determine your pool volume.

Make all your measurements in feet (i.e., 12.5 vs. 12’6") and use them in the equations below. Record your pool volume in the Water Chemistry Log Sheet for quick reference.

Test pH, Alkalinity, and  Hardness each week and record value.
- Total Alkalinity holds the pH steady.
  Always adjust the Alkalinity first and retest

  Adjust at the start of the season and 
  increase monthly if required.
3. Test your pool water at least once per week for water chemistry parameters.
  • Free Chlorine

  • Test for Cyanuric Acid (Chlorine Stabilizer) each month


Always refer to the "Directions for Use" on the product labels before adding chemicals to pool water. The Directions for Use should explain how to determine the dosage of each chemical and how to add the product to the pool water.

Calcium Hardness and Cyanuric Acid can both be increased, but they cannot be decreased, so it is important not to over adjust these parameters. They should be adjusted, if needed, at the start of each season and monitored monthly thereafter.

Use the Water Chemistry Log Sheet to record and monitor tests results, chemical additions and observations.
4. Organize water treatment to make it easy and convenient.
Pool water chemistry can be broken down into weekly, monthly, and specialty treatment. We recommend testing every week and recording your results. Over time you will learn how the different parameters trend and you will be able to adjust accordingly. In general:
  • Sanitizer (free chlorine) must be maintained between 1–4 ppm at all times.

  • Non-chlorine shock oxidation should be done each week. Most non-chlorine shock oxidizers that contain DuPont™ Oxone® monopersulfate are added at 1 pound of product per 10,000 gallons of pool water.

  • In many cases, only monthly adjustment of Water Balance parameters is needed. The Total Alkalinity holds the pH steady and prevents it from drifting. Always adjust the Alkalinity first and retest the next day to see if the pH requires adjustment.

  • Specialty treatments like clarifiers, algaecides, enzymes, and stain and scale control products should be used in accordance with label directions.
5. Special situations such as heavy rain and wind.
Heavy rain and wind can introduce significant contamination and exert heavy demand on chlorine sanitizers. After heavy rain or wind, check and adjust free chlorine as needed, and add an Oxone® non-chlorine shock oxidizer to remove contaminants. Check Alkalinity and pH and adjust as needed. Remember to always adjust Alkalinity first.
