p-Phenylenediamine

Product Description and Uses

PPD is a low toxicity diamine used as a component of engineering polymers and composites, aramid fibers, hair dyes, rubber chemicals, textile dyes and pigments. PPD is selected for the outstanding properties it imparts, including high temperature stability, high strength, and chemical and electrical resistance.

PPD is offered molten in bulk or in free-flowing flakes. Four grades are available to meet your specific needs. PPD AD (derived from an aniline process) is preferred for most uses, including resin and polymer applications. PPD Cosmetic Grade is derived from a different process and the only grade acceptable for hair dyes or similar cosmetic applications.

p-Phenylenediamine is soluble in water, alcohol, and ether and only slightly soluble in chloroform. All grades of PPD are sensitive to air and/or moisture, and the presence of either tends to hasten color deterioration. It may darken on storage. This effect is less pronounced in the high purity grade.

DuPont does not recomend and will not knowingly offer or sell p-phenylenediamine (PPD) for uses involving prolonged skin contact. Such uses may involve, but are not limited to, products formulated with henna for tattoo applications or other skin coloration effects. This use of PPD in prolonged skin contact application has the potential to induce allergic skin reactions in sensitive individuals.

Persons proposing to use PPD in any formulation involving any more than incidental skin contact must rely on their own medical and legal judgment without any representation on our part. They must accept full responsibility for the safety and effectiveness of their formulations.

Shipping Information

PPD flakes are supplied in fiber drums and 500-kg bulk bags. In addition, PPD Cosmetic Grade is offered in convenient 22-lb (10-kg) drums. Other sizes are available on request. Molten PPD is supplied in tank trucks, tank cars, and ISO tanks.
