on Turf Insecticide Modes of Action and Resistance Management at GCSAA 2008

Industry’s First In-depth Seminar for Superintendents on Insecticide Modes of Action and Strategies for Managing Resistance to Insecticides

WILMINGTON, Del., Dec. 3, 2007 – DuPont Professional Products has partnered with Dr. Patricia Vittum of the University of Massachusetts to present the industry’s first comprehensive seminar on insecticide modes of action and resistance management at the 2008 GCSAA Education Conference, the company announced today.  On Jan. 29 at 8:00 a.m. at the Orlando conference Dr. Chuck Silcox, global product development manager for DuPont Professional Products, and Dr. Vittum will provided a half-day seminar.  The seminar will help golf course superintendents understand the modes of action of the most common turf insecticides and to understand how insects develop resistance to insecticides.  Superintendents will leave this seminar with the ability to develop strategies that are most suitable for their course in minimizing the likelihood of resistance development.

Dr. Vittum and Dr. Silcox will review the primary insect physiological systems that are targeted with insecticides and will explain the modes of action of the most commonly used turfgrass insecticides.  They will also provide an overview of the major types of resistance and the key factors that influence resistance development.  Dr. Vittum and Dr. Silcox will conclude their presentation with case studies on several key insects that have demonstrated resistance including annual bluegrass weevil, chinch bug and white grubs.
