Application Note

The versatile BAX® system can be used to detect several different pathogens in a variety of foods.  It has been validated by government agencies and third-party laboratories around the world as an accurate and reliable method for detecting Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes in fruits and vegetables. The BAX® system is also an AOAC-approved method for detecting E. coli O157:H7 in fruit juice.

With the recent outbreaks of E. coli O157:H7 in spinach and lettuce, an increasing number of food processors want to know how they can use the BAX® system to detect this pathogen in fresh produce. Based on our experience with plant-type foods, DuPont Qualicon believes that the BAX® system enrichment protocol for fruit juices can be modified for use with produce.

Other atypical protocols may also be successful, such as those recently validated by Health Canada for using the BAX® system to detect E. coli O157:H7 not only in vegetables, but also in fruit, dairy, animal feed, environmentals and more.

DuPont Qualicon is committed to working with food processors to find the most effective and efficient testing solution. If you wish to test produce for E. coli O157:H7 with the BAX® system, contact us for technical assistance at 800-863-6842.
