U.S. Refrigerant Reclaim Program

What You Need to Know

Where do I take my recovered refrigerant?

Find a DuPont Authorized Refrigerant Reclaim Center near you. DuPont adheres to the criteria and specifications of an EPA-certified refrigerant reclaimer and destruction process.

Why do I need to recover and reclaim refrigerants?

The EPA has estimated that 20% of the service market will need recycled and/or reclaim R-22 to make up this shortfall. Reclaim R-22 will be a necessary part of supply in 2010.

Why do I need to recover refrigerant now?

A 27.5 million pound shortfall is anticipated in 2010, according to EPA projections. Two critical ways business owners and facility managers can avoid any potential negative impact to their operations are:

Savvy service technicians and equipment owners have a refrigerant management plan in place now to transition away from R-22. They know that it will allow existing equipment to continue operating safely and effectively for the remainder of its useful life, ensuring business continuity with no need to invest in costly replacement equipment. Business owners understand that the R-22 presently in their equipment is an asset that provides them several options. They can recover and recycle the R-22 for servicing other equipment that they own, ensuring a low-cost supply of R-22, or they can recover and reclaim the R-22 to be put back into the marketplace. Contact a DuPont Authorized Refrigerant Reclaim Center for details about their reclaim progams and your options.

A refrigerant management plan should include the following steps:

  • Repair all leaks
  • Recover and reclaim
  • Retrofit to alternative refrigerants
  • Recommend new equipment with non-ozone-depleting refrigerants like R-410A

How can I start reclaiming gas?

Recover R-22 and return to an authorized refrigerant reclaim center. Options vary by reclaim center. Contact the authorized reclaim center in your area for specifics about their program.

Reclaim R-22 will be essential to supply

January 1, 2010, is the next major phasedown of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) under the Montreal Protocol and this date is fast approaching. Retrofit your refrigeration systems to non-ozone-depleting hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) alternatives now; it makes good business and economic sense. Refer to our top 6 reasons why. Minimize the impact of anticipated R-22 supply shortages, price volatility, and likely labor shortages by acting now.

How do I choose a refrigerant to replace R-22?

For Existing Equipment, evaluate alternative refrigerant options that offer:

  • Non-ozone-depleting HFC
  • Lowest total cost of ownership
  • Energy efficiency
  • Low environmental impact

Learn about alternative refrigerants that are readily available for direct expansion systems to retrofit from R-22. Also refer to the HCFC General Replacement Guide.
