Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, or MRSA, is a form of the common staph bacteria that is resistant to treatment with many antibiotics. While it is often found on the skin or in the noses of healthy individuals, it can cause severe skin infections or, if it enters the bloodstream or respiratory system, death. Previously, MRSA was primarily a concern to hospitals; in recent years, however, drastic increases in the number of MRSA cases in the general population have been noted. Outbreaks in schools, health clubs, and correctional institutions have been well documented in the media.

When it comes to controlling the spread of the MRSA bacteria, or dealing with an outbreak, there are a number of steps facilities such as schools or health clubs can take. Leading infection control experts stress the following to help break the chain of infection:

  • Education
  • Early diagnosis and treatment
  • Elimination of shared items (soap, towels, razors)
  • Good hand hygiene
  • Environmental cleaning/disinfection processes
