Consumer FAQs

When people discover there's "glass that's more than glass," they often ask questions about how it works and where to buy it. Here are some typical consumer-oriented questions and answers.

Does DuPont film come on a roll to put on existing windows? If so where do I order it.
No, DuPont interlayers are not sold as films or rolls for use on already-installed glass or windows.

BACK

We have an application for a glass floor. Please provide some information about what spans are possible and required thicknesses etc.
DuPont does not offer design assistance for individual projects. Glass floors typically involve several layers of glass and interlayer, and are specialized applications requiring careful engineering by qualified professionals.

BACK

I have artwork that I would like to see in glass. Can DuPont help?
DuPont is not a manufacturer of finished decorative glass. We license a technology called "SentryGlas® Expressions™" for digitally printing onto polymer interlayers as part of the safety glass laminating process. Licensed producers of such glass are available worldwide. See the "Where to Buy" section.

BACK

What is the lead-time on your DuPont SentryGlas interlayer?
That depends. DuPont ships clear SentryGlas interlayer sheets to laminators in custom cut and standard sizes. Many laminators keep their own inventory of SentryGlas sheets and can schedule lamination of your specified glass immediately. Laminators who require cut-to-order sheet, or who have other work already scheduled for their factory, can quote finished safety glass delivery times and prices when you contact them about your project.
For SentryGlas Expressions printed decorative interlayers, each project will typically involve an exchange of artwork prior to the printing, and other steps to assure that your finished glass matches your design vision.

BACK

Can DuPont Butacite or SentryGlas be used to help assemble solar modules?
Yes. DuPont PV5200 and PV5300 Series photovoltaic encapsulating sheets are based on Butacite PVB and SentryGlas ionoplast, respectively. The PV encapsulating sheets are specialized to address needs that differ from those of clear or decorative safety glazing. Solar module manufacturers and development researchers should contact DuPont Photovoltaic Solutions for more details. Visist for more information about DuPont PV Encapsulants.

Maximum size of laminated glass is often dependent on the size of the laminating line and the autoclave. Typical laminating lines vary in width from 84 in. to 130 in.

BACK

Can I please get a sample of Butacite® in Cherry Red Classic and Butacite Soft White.
DuPont supplies samples of Butacite® color interlayer to laminators, who create samples in glass as a reference material for designers working on projects. If you have not selected a laminator, consult the listing on this site. Many have sample stock readily available for DuPont colors and others.

BACK

What is the low-frequency noise reduction for regular, tempered and laminated glass?
Sound transmission is reduced through laminated glass because the soft interlayer absorbs some of the vibration at frequencies in the audible range. Sound tranmission data for selected glass configurations is included in the Technical Library on this site. No additional data are provided by DuPont related to acoustic design.

BACK

Please let me know the minimum thickness of tempered glass and heat strengthened glass panels that can be laminated. Are there any quality issues around heat-treated glass?
Questions about glass and laminating should be addressed to a laminator. Tempered and very thin glass create challenges during processing, but modern equipment and careful handling by quality-oriented glass manufacturers can minimize problems and help meet special design requirements.

BACK

We are looking for an alternative to stained glass for our church building and SentryGlas® Expressions™ seem to be the answer. Do you have an office in [my location] where we can get in touch regarding our project?
DuPont does not supply printed decorative interlayers; it licenses companies around the world to do the printing and laminating. See the "Where to Buy" page on this site to locate a SentryGlas® Expressions™ decorative safety glass supplier near you.

BACK

The south wall of our house is made up of 18 thermal pane windows, 6 windows across by 3 windows high; each window is approx. 4' wide by 6' high and individually framed. The wall slopes at an approx. 30-degree angle. All of the window seals are broken, and there is condensation between the panes.
Please address your window concerns to a window manufacturer or installer. DuPont does not make windows and is not able to consult with homeowners about window design or replacement.

BACK

What is the pricing and warranty available with DuPont™ SentryGlas®?
DuPont™ SentryGlas® is an interlayer purchased in sheet form by glass manufacturers, for use in making safety glass and structural glazing. DuPont product pricing and warranty support are negotiated individually with each laminator. Pricing and warranties for finished glass or windows can be discussed with the laminator or window company you choose to work with.

BACK

We are looking for some glass stair treads for a job we have. Please look at the attached drawings and see if you are interested in quoting the Glass Type GL-7.
DuPont is unable to evaluate project designs or quote glass prices for stairs or other finished glass products. DuPont is an interlayer (plastic sheet) supplier. Use of DuPont™ SentryGlas® interlayers is common in stairs, flooring and other structural glass because of the interlayer's extra stiffness and post-breakage strength. Engineering of structural glass is a matter for glass experts, and the finished glass or stair pricing is determined by the manufacturer and installer.

BACK

We own a home in Florida and are interested in an aftermarket installation of a glass protective interlayer. Does DuPont offer a product that can be applied onto existing glass?
No, DuPont's interlayer products are not surface-applied; they are fabricated into or onto glass before the glass is installed in a frame or opening. Surface-applied window films are available from many companies, and can increase safety or reduce solar gain compared with unprotected glass, but such films typically offer reduced protection or durability compared with factory-laminated safety glass.

BACK

We live in a mid-century ranch house and have nine double French door/windows. They are all single-pane glass mounted on wooden framed doors and windows. Is laminated glass something that we can use to replace a single pane glass on doors/windows?
Probably not. The sash and framing for thin, single-pane glass are typically not able to accommodate the added thickness of laminated safety glass or insulated glass.

BACK

What is the maximum size of a laminated glass pane?
The maximum height and width of laminated glass depends on the glass laminator's equipment capability, and the safety interlayer's maximum size. DuPont™ SentryGlas® interlayers come in sheets no wider than 98 inches (2.5 meters); sheet length can be as long as desired. Finished glass sizes are typically constrained by shipping, weight and installation equipment boundaries. DuPont™ Butacite® interlayers come in a maximum sheet width of 130 inches (3.3 meters).

BACK

Are all blast-resistant glazing systems inherently bullet-resistant as well? We need a system that is both. Preferably GSA Performance Level 3a for blasts.
DuPont safety interlayers are used in high-performance blast- and bullet-resistant glazing. Most such glass is a complex, multilayered composite structure requiring special testing. Specifiers of high-performance glazing are responsible for determining performance requirements, applicable test standards and any additional performance testing related to specific threats or risks.
