New Hard Coated DuPont™ Spallshield® PET Film Broadens Safety Glass Manufacturing Options

WILMINGTON, Del., Dec. 19, 2011 - DuPont Glass Laminating Solutions today announced a new ultra-clear PET film with hard coat, designed to broaden the ways high-performance safety glass is made.

The new product offering, DuPont™ Spallshield® CPET sheeting, is a durable polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film made with a DuPont-proprietary hard coating for scratch resistance. It is designed for use as an external surface on glass laminates where spall protection is desired. 

Typical uses are in mass transportation (trains, buses) for driver and occupant safety; in lighter-weight automotive skylights for fuel savings; and in buildings for added protection against flying glass in cases of vandalism, blasts or ballistic attack.

The new anti-spall film can be used on safety glass of any thickness, in conjunction with a variety of other laminating materials, such as DuPont™ Butacite® polyvinyl butyral (PVB) and polyurethane (PU) sheeting.  A similar hard-coated film was used by DuPont in recent years to make a pre-composited PET/PVB laminating product called Spallshield®. Now, customers can make film composites using their own choice of materials compatible with the Spallshield® CPET surface film.

DuPont™ Spallshield® CPET spall protection film is available globally. Standard roll width is 60 inches (1.52 m) with a length of 820 ft (250 m).  Sample rolls with widths of 60 inches (1.52m) and lengths of 164 ft (50-m) are available immediately for physical testing and manufacturing trials.
