Life Cycle Analysis
The sustainability story for Sorona® starts at the very beginning and continues through to the consumer and beyond. DuPont™ Sorona® contains 37% annually renewable plant based ingredients by weight. (28% biobased carbon). A breakthrough in integrated science, Sorona® combines the best of chemistry, biology and material science resulting in this innovative product. Sorona® is an advanced material that offers a unique combination of attributes and benefits throughout the value chain..
The Sorona® sustainability story begins with the reduction of oil and continues through the product life cycle providing energy and production savings for every step of the value chain. In addition to reducing dependency on oil, the production of Sorona® saves energy and reduced CO2 emissions that have been shown to contribute to climate change, over the production of an equal amount of nylon. Sorona® fiber extrusion occurs at lower temperatures than other synthetic fibers, thereby reducing energy needs and costs. Fiber and fabric production costs are lower since Sorona® can dye at the boiling point of water with no additional heat, pressure, or chemical carriers. Consumers benefit from the longevity of Sorona® due to its fade resistance, wrinkle resistance and faster drying benefits. The versatility and adaptability of Sorona® fiber, can impart these environmental benefits to many end uses and fabric types including, wovens, knits, circular knits, warp knits and more.
Producing DuPont™ Sorona® uses 30% less energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 63% compared to the production of an equal amount of nylon 6. What's more, Sorona® doesn’t use or contain heavy metals and requires no additional chemical treatments for stain resistance. Less energy, lower emissions, no added chemical treatments. With Sorona®, Less really is More.
