There’s more to proper stone care than you might think. Apply this valuable insight to ensure you’re always prepared to get the best results when cleaning your granite.
An Ounce of Protection
The best way to prevent stains on your granite is to treat its surface with DuPont™ Granite & Marble Countertop Sealer. Natural stone can be very porous. Sealers help repel spills on the surface, giving you time to wipe them away before they have a chance to penetrate your stone. Unlike some sealers, DuPont™ Granite & Marble Countertop Sealer will not darken your stone.
Step Away from the Household Cleaner
Natural stone requires cleaning products that are specifically made for its unique mineral composition. Abrasive household cleaners wear away the sealer, putting your surface at risk of a stain. For everyday cleaning, DuPont™ Granite & Marble Countertop Cleaner cleans with a gentle, pH-neutral formula that removes soils.
Kitchen & Bathroom Countertop Maintenance
Many household foods, beverages and cosmetics can damage stone. Common toiletries like perfume, toothpaste and mouthwash contain acids and other ingredients that can degrade the sealer or even damage your stone’s surface. Exercise caution with common foods and beverages, like orange juice or soft drinks, that also contain acids.
Regular use of DuPont™ Granite & Marble Countertop Cleaner will remove residues from cooking oils, everyday food spills, hairspray and other cosmetics.
What to Do When a Spill Occurs
No matter how careful you are, spills happen. If spills are left for extended periods of time, they can damage or penetrate the sealer. A quick response, and using DuPont™ Stone Care products, can keep spills from degrading the sealer and damaging your natural stone.
For all spills, you want to remove as much of the material as possible without allowing it to spread, using something non-abrasive like a soft sponge, nylon brush or plastic spoon. Then simply clean the area with DuPont™ Granite & Marble Countertop Cleaner or DuPont™ Granite & Marble Countertop Cleaner + Protector.
Naturally, food and drink will be the most common spills. Quickly scoop up food with a plastic spoon and wipe up liquids with a clean, dry white terrycloth. Use DuPont™ Granite & Marble Countertop Cleaner or DuPont™ Granite & Marble Countertop Cleaner + Protector and wipe with a clean cloth. If necessary, repeat.
If you don’t spot a stain immediately, don’t panic. Clean it using the method described above. Whatever doesn’t come out often fades over time. Advanced cleaning techniques are available for different types of stains. Please call our Technical Service Advisors at 1-888-241-2780 for details.
