Application Description

A coex film of LDPE and Surlyn® laminated to metallized PET is used in a multilayer structure for ready-to-eat cakes. The package is gas flushed to preserve quality and improve shelf life of the cake.

Benefits Gained

· Surlyn® provides hermetic seals, preserving the modified atmosphere of and therefore the high quality of the cake

· Increased line speeds, due to the lower seal-initiation temperature of Surlyn®

· Reliable seals - even through grease or particulate (sugar) contamination

· The hot-tack strength of Surlyn® prevents seal failure after nitrogen flushing

Materials Selected and Why

The low hot-tack strength of LLDPE made it unable to withstand gas flushing. It also demanded lower line speeds. Surlyn® 1652SB was chosen to replace LLDPE in this application due to its good adhesion to the LDPE in the coex film as well as its excellent sealing performance.
