Application Description

Thanks to DuPont™ Surlyn®, the Amcor OptiSur structure for vacuum thermoformed packages offers a high quality structure and a cost competitive solution to both the  fresh and processed sausage meat  industry.

Its main performance is a strong secondary sealing that avoids leakers and negative, visual aspects. No liquid or blood can flow around the pack, preventing potential bacteria growth in the liquid. Secondary sealing is a short thermal process given to the closed vacuum pack, using steam, hot air or hot water. The heat and the strength of the vacuum creates a second seal on all the film areas of the pack where there is no product, therefore reducing the possibilities for punctures and vacuum losses.

The other benefits of Surlyn® used in this Amcor OptiSur structure are:

  • Complete seal integrity, even if water, brine or fat spots occur in the sealing area
  • Low temperature seal initiation which allows higher production speeds
  • Glossier films than with polyethylene alternatives
  • Meat adhesion, which reduces the separation of meat juices inside the pack and helps retain the pack shape
  • Cost effectiveness of the overall solution thanks to the greater stiffness and sealability of Surlyn® compared to polyethylene

"On such products", says Fernando Lista, Amcor Flexibles  Sales Manager, "the secondary seal gained by using Surlyn® in the OptiSur structure gives an even greater advantage over and above the usual high performance properties achieved with Surlyn®". OptiSur is mainly used in vacuum packs for Frankfurter sausages but it can also be used for other kinds of meat products with a high level of water activity and therefore a strong risk of serum or blood loss over time".
