DuPont Emphasizes Need for Global Collaborations in Addressing Worker Safety

September 8, 2011

DuPont will emphasize the necessity of using an inclusive, collaborative approach in responding to the world’s safety challenges at next week’s XIX World Congress on Safety and Health at Work.

“For all of us who value a safe and healthy work environment, the World Congress is an excellent forum for the free exchange of knowledge, best practices and new technologies,” said DuPont Executive Vice President Mark Vergnano. “By fostering the cooperation necessary to develop a global prevention culture and greater protection for workers and their families, it provides a real world example of what we at DuPont call ‘inclusive innovation.’ As in past years, DuPont is proud to be a sponsor and take part in this important assembly.”

DuPont is a premier sponsor of the World Congress and will have a prominent presence at the Sept. 11–15 event in Istanbul, Turkey, uniting its activities under the theme, “A Global Collaboratory on Protection.”

Over the course of the World Congress, DuPont will be leading or participating in the following events:

  • Co-sponsored by DuPont, the Campbell Institute of the U.S. National Safety Council and human resources consultant Mercer, this event takes place Sept. 11. Executive decision-makers and thought leaders representing industry, academia and advocacy groups will examine a leader’s role in building and sustaining a strong safety culture and how culture can help organizations achieve operational excellence, minimize enterprise risk, encourage innovation and fuel transformation. DuPont Sustainable Solutions President Jim Weigand and DuPont Protection Technologies President Tom Powell will participate.
  • DuPont Sustainable Solutions will announce the five winners of the 10th Annual DuPont Safety Awards at a special ceremony Sept. 12. The awards recognize outstanding initiatives towards workplace safety enhancements and incident prevention in the Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) region. Speaking at the ceremony will be Jim Weigand and Koen van Neyghem, managing director, DuPont Sustainable Solutions – EMEA.
  • DuPont safety and protection experts will be delivering presentations during these sessions.
  • DuPont will exhibit products and services at the International Health and Safety Exhibition being held concurrently with the World Congress.

In addition, DuPont will host ‘A Global Collaboratory on Protection – Protecting the World: How Safe Is Safe?’ to be moderated Gavin Esler, regular presenter on the BBC. This Sept. 14 event is part of an ongoing sponsorship with the BBC World News Horizons program, which examines how inclusive innovation—a DuPont approach to problem-solving— is addressing the world’s biggest problems. Global Collaboratory events, focused on food, energy and protection, are being held around the world to generate and extend the conversation around these issues. At this Global Collaboratory on Protection, invited guests will hear a discussion among distinguished panelists about how business enterprises, governments, other organizations and individuals can be more proactive and collaborative in approaching global safety. A question and answer period will enable attendees to engage with panelists and one another.

The World Congress on Safety and Health at Work is the world's largest international event on occupational safety and health. Held every three years and organized by the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the International Social Security Administration (ISSA), it draws together several thousand leaders and influencers of workplace safety policy from industry, government and labor to present and discuss emerging safety research, trends, best practices and innovations.
