Zonyl® fluoroadditives can be used in a variety of coating formulations. It is important to remember, however, that the very low surface tension of smooth PTFE at 19 dynes/cm suggests that lower surface tension solvents approaching the level of PTFE will be the most effective. Emulsions, suspensions, and formulations using aqueous and hydrocarbon bases are possible and sometimes facilitated by the use of wetting agents or surfactants (such as Zonyl® fluorosurfactants).
Wax Formulations
Tests have shown that the chemical and abrasion resistant protective properties of wax formulations can be improved by the addition of Zonyl® fluoroadditives. In addition to enhancing anti-stick and low-friction behavior of coatings, Zonyl® fluoroadditives may be able to satisfy a variety of other needs, such as better water repellency, compatibility with solvent or melt coating processes, and FDA and EEC regulations
Paints and Stains
Formulations of interior latex flat and semi-gloss paint containing Zonyl® MP 1200 or TE-3667N fluoroadditives can exhibit improved stain and scrub resistance without affecting fineness of grind, viscosity, or blocking resistance. Exterior latex wood stains can enjoy improved water repellency without loss of viscosity or fineness of grind. Concentrations of 1 to 5 percent of total formulation solids have been found to be adequate. Self-polishing, anti-fouling marine bottom paint containing up to 30 percent Zonyl® fluoroadditives have been used.
Zonyl® fluoroadditives have been used in decorative coatings on metal cans to improve rub resistance of "no varnish" systems.
Industrial and Protective Maintenance Coatings
Added to electrostatic spray or fluidized bed coatings at 5 to 15 percent by weight, Zonyl® fluoroadditive powders may modify the surface of complex shapes to enhance mold release, wear, or frictional properties. They can serve as binders for inorganic powders that are molded at high temperatures. Improved lubricity and abrasion resistance imparted to coil coatings can make them more resistant to damage in transit or during shaping into end products. Hard gaskets coated with Zonyl® fluoroadditives can be removed with less damage to machined-metal faces of cylinder heads or pipe flanges.
