Zonyl® PTFE

Zonyl® fluoroadditives can be used in formulations for lithographic, flexographic, and gravure inks. Improvements in rub and scuff resistance, slip, and surface smoothness provide superior printed image protection and easier winding and stacking. For example, ink "set-off" between front and back covers of stacked magazines (blocking) can be minimized with the addition of Zonyl® fluoroadditives. The use of Zonyl® fluoroadditives aids in the production of high-gloss inks by allowing a reduction in wax.

Heatset, quickset, and metal decorating inks for lithography are formulated with fluoroadditives, waxes, solvents, and resins.

Recommended Grades

For most lithographic systems, Zonyl® MP 1200 is the best choice. With an average particle size of 2.5 to 4.5 µm and a consistent surface area of 2.3 to 4.5 m/g, it incorporates easily into inks without affecting their viscosity or thixotropy. The particle size and shape of MP 1200 is not affected by shearing forces during manufacture of the ink formulation.

Zonyl® MP 1100 is recommended for solvent-based flexography and gravure inks because these systems require a very fine particle size. MP 1100 is partially agglomerated into particles 1.8 to 4.0 µm. It is very friable and can break down into primary particles around 0.2 µm. This can be achieved in a media mill (shot, ball, or sand). Inks with MP 1100 have excellent gloss.

Zonyl® MP 1300 and MP 1400 are recommended for water-based flexography because of their larger particle size (7 to 15 µm) and compliance with FDA and EEC regulations for a component of articles for contact with food. These additives are excellent slip enhancers for a variety of water-based inks. They are not friable and will maintain their particle size and shape.

Zonyl® MP 1600 and TE-3667N water based dispersion are recommended for all ink compounds that are subject to grinding (media mill). It can be significantly reduced in particle size to minimize adverse effects on gloss. MP 1600 complies with FDA and EEC regulations for a component of articles for repeated contact with food.
