Zonyl® PTFE

Lubricant Fluoroadditives

Zonyl® fluoroadditive powders are ideal solid lubricants because they have smaller coefficients of static and dynamic friction than any other solid material. Chemically inert and useful from cryogenic to high temperatures, they are added to existing lubricating systems to extend their performance range. Used alone, they can reduce wear and provide longer life for bearing surfaces. Zonyl® fluoroadditive powders are excellent lubricant additives for conditions where conventional additives, such as graphite or molybdenum disulfide are unsuitable. Zonyl® fluoroadditives are white in color and some grades can be used in lubricating oils, greases and sealants in the food processing, confectionary, and dairy industries.

Grease

Mechanical equipment in hostile environments may benefit from additives to ensure smooth movement at all speeds and long-term reliability. Examples are camera parts, valves, plastic gears and linkages in aerospace service. Purity and lack of reactivity are benefits in food processing equipment. Systems requiring low starting torque without stick-slip action or where long periods of inactivity (safety valves and taps) are required benefit from Zonyl® fluoroadditives, at up to 40 percent loading which provide fail-safe security if other lubrication components fail.

 

Oil

Oils are a large family of products. They provide one or more functions such as lubrication, cooling, transferring energy or motion, and insulating electrical devices. Zonyl® fluoroadditives have the potential for providing solid lubricant particles without affecting other functions.

Zonyl® fluoroadditives are sometimes used in formulations made for addition to the lubricating oil in internal combustion engines or other machinery using high performance oil. The chemical and thermal stability of PTFE particles is important to this use.

MP1100 is a good candidate for the formulation of a stable colloidal dispersion because it can break down into very small particles when sheared in a liquid medium. Also, a liquid based "concentrate" can be used to facilitate good distribution into a much larger quantity of a liquid host material.

 

Direct Use for Lubricants

Zonyl® fluoroadditives can be applied directly as dry powder, spray, or paste. Sliding surfaces or woven structures are easy to lubricate, and Zonyl® fluoroadditive powder is much cleaner than graphite or molybdenum disulfide powder and less contaminating than silicones. Uses include cables, rope, glass cloth, fibrous packings, window slides, and security locks. Visit the Krytox® web site for information on fluorinated oils and greases.

 

Direct Use for Sealants

Pipe thread sealant paste containing Zonyl® fluoroadditives can be made with a simple hydrocarbon carrier or with a thermosetting resin, providing easy release even after long service.
