DuPont manufacturers specialty fluoropolymer resins using proprietary technology licensed from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that replaces traditional water-based polymerization with a process based on supercritical carbon dioxide (C02).
New Technology
This new technology produces fluoropolymers with enhanced performance and processing capabilities, while generating less waste.
Performance Benefits
Some enhanced performance benefits include:
- increased tensile strength and elongation at higher temperature
- increased stress crack resistance
- better thermal stability
- less creep
- enhanced optical properties
- higher purity
- FEP resins with significantly improved flex life
Uses & Applications
The new process is used to make select melt-processible products for applications such as wire and cable insulation and jackets, flexible tubing, and industrial films. The new process can also be used to make other melt-processible fluoropolymers whose applications include high-purity fluid handling systems. These new fluoropolymers have been targeted at the data communications, semiconductor, automotive and other industrial markets.
