Teflon® AF provides the required combination of low refractive index, optical clarity, and consistency in application

Application Description
Light for the LightWear™ surgical headlight is supplied through a single optical fiber of quartz clad with an ultrathin coating (10 to 20 mm) of Teflon® AF amorphous fluoropolymer resin.
Reason for choosing Teflon® AF
Teflon® AF provided the required combination of low refractive index, optical clarity and consistency in application of thin coatings.
Benefits Gained
- Brilliant Light
The low refractive index of Teflon® AF (1.30) gives the clad fiber a wide angle of illumination, enhancing its efficiency in collecting sunlight-quality light from a xenon arc source for delivery to the headlight.
- Lighter Weight, Less Fatigue
The LightWear headlight and fiber together weigh only 4.5 oz (128 g), 80% less than systems using bundles of less efficient optical fibers, according to Cogent.
- More Freedom of Movement
With no loss in trasmission, cables can be up to 15 ft (4.6 m) long, twice the length of other systems, according to Cogent. Consistent performance. Teflon® AF in solution is readily applied in ultra-thin layers with consistent results. Multiple coats are used to assure pinhole-free cladding.
