Teflon® PFA HP Safeguards Purity in Analytical Systems

Application Description
Upchurch Scientific® meets the need for ultrahigh-purity tubing and fittings in the analytical instrument and semiconductor markets with DuPont Teflon® PFA HP fluoropolymer. Applications for such components include high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), semiconductor-based analytical systems for pharmaceutical research and for fluid handling systems in manufacturing semiconductor microelectronic devices.
Using its proprietary process, Upchurch injection molds precise, tight-tolerance parts from Teflon® PFA HP to its customers’ specifications. The company also custom extrudes tubing from the material in continuous or cut tubing lengths:
- ODs from 0.030 to 0.250 in. (0.76 to 6.4 mm)
- Walls as thin as 0.005 in. (0.13 mm)
- IDs as small as 0.010 in. (0.25 mm)
- Standard tolerances of ±0.001 in. (±0.025 mm) OD and ID for 1/16 in. (1.6 mm) OD tubing
- Custom tubing forming, assemblies, kits, packaging and labeling.
Upchurch Scientific® also extrudes and molds products from other grades of DuPont Teflon® PFA, Teflon® FEP and Tefzel® fluoropolymer resins.
Benefits Gained
- Accurate Assays
The exceptional purity of Teflon® PFA HP helps prevent contamination of critical chemical and biological fluids. Through precise manufacturing techniques, Upchurch reports that it can ensure reliable fluid-transfer connections and reproducible volume transfers.
- Versatility
Thanks to the purity, chemical resistance and relatively high operating temperature of Teflon® PFA HP, Upchurch’s tubing and fittings can be used with a broad range of processes, solvents and samples.
- Ease of Use
Upchurch’s flangeless fittings design avoids the need for flared tubing, greatly simplifying establishment of tubing connections and reconnections.
Materials Selected and Why
Teflon® PFA 440 HP meets purity, cleanliness and chemical compatibility requirements as well as tight extrusion and injection molding tolerances.
