Product Stewardship Notes
DuPont Titanium Technologies is committed to excellence in product stewardship. Our Product Stewardship Program promotes adherence to the principles of safety, health and environmental protection throughout the life cycle of Ti-Pure®
titanium dioxide (TiO2
) products. DuPont shares its learnings, recommendations and innovations in TiO2
product stewardship technology with our customers to assist in their own product stewardship efforts.
Medical Applications Policy
The information in this section applies to those customers who supply or use Ti-Pure®
in medical articles, devices or applications. You may recall the "DuPont Policy Regarding Medical Applications of DuPont Materials" stated below that has been in effect since January 1, 1993.
- DuPont will not supply materials for use in medical articles or applications intended for permanent implantation in the human body or in permanent contact with internal body fluids or tissues.
- Sales of materials for use in medical articles or applications intended for brief or temporary implantation in the human body, or in brief or temporary contact with internal body fluids or tissues,
- DuPont does not provide samples for research, technical information, or technical support for any of the medical applications mentioned above.
Copies of DuPont's Medical Policy and Caution Statements may be obtained by calling Mr. Brian Coleman at 302-999-2122, USA. The continued adherence by customers to this Policy is requested.
FDA and NSF Status for Ti-Pure® TiO2 in Plastics Applications
grades of R-101, R-102, R-103, R-104, R-105, R-108, R-350, and R-960 are acceptable for FDA indirect food contact uses, under 21 CFR 178.3297 (Colorants for Polymers). Ti-Pure®
grades R-103, R-104, R-108, and R-350 are acceptable up to 25 weight percent maximum loading of titanium dioxide to polymer content. Ti-Pure®
grades R-101, R102, R-105 and R-960 have no loading limitations.
The National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) has issued certifications for Ti-Pure®
grades R-101, R-102, R-103, R-104, R-105, R-108, R-900, and R-902+. NSF certification allows these grades to be interchanged in approved pipe compounds at loadings up to 5.0 parts per hundred (phr) resin. While most other TiO2
grades could be used for NSF plastic pipe applications, the specific pipe producer must individually approve them as an ingredient.
Plastic Bag Caution
Due to the potential for static charge to be present when handling Ti-Pure®
grades that have been packaged in plastic bags, the following caution statement has been printed on the bags: "CAUTION: Plastic bag material may cause static ignition hazard in the presence of flammable or explosive vapor/air mixtures. Do not handle or use bags in the presence of flammable or explosive vapor/air mixtures." For further information on this subject, please see the following report:
DuPont customers are urged to review their TiO2 product uses and current handling practices for consistency with the above recommendations.
