Revolutionary metallised building membrane launched on the Irish market

Press Release, 01 July 2006

DuPont today launched Tyvek® Enercor® in Ireland - a new energy-saving, reflective, and yet breathable building membrane in its Tyvek® range.

Tyvek® Enercor®'s unique feature is a metallised, breathable surface, which improves insulation in buildings while removing unwanted moisture. The product is based on the pioneering technology developed by DuPont, which led to the creation of the first vapour open building membranes in the 1960s.

DuPont Business Manager for Ireland Mark Hill explains: "When installed in the wall or over the top of rafters or trusses, Tyvek® Enercor® provides a vapour-permeable air and water barrier, which stops airflow while still allowing attic moisture to escape by diffusion."

Tyvek® Enercor® features a metal surface which significantly improves the heat transfer resistance of an air cavity, provides a barrier against air leakage, while still removing potentially harmful moisture. The benefit in winter is that radiant heat loss is reduced, lowering energy consumption and reducing the risk of interstitial condensation, while in summer it helps to keep buildings cool by reflecting external radiant heat.

"As the thermal efficiency is maximised, less insulation is needed - meaning roof and wall thicknesses can be reduced and thus the building’s footprint can also be minimised," says Hill.

The name Enercor® was chosen to reflect the quality that makes the membrane so innovative - namely, its ability to manage energy within the building's core. It will be distributed in the Irish market by Insulation Distributors Ltd for wall and roof applications as Tyvek® Enercor® Wall and Tyvek® Enercor® Roof.

Hill continues: "In the new legislation on the energy performance of buildings, instead of a target U-value, an overall energy efficiency rating has to be achieved. This means that any gains in the efficiency of roofs and walls can offset other, less efficient parts of the structure, e.g. large glazed areas, allowing more freedom in the building design. Already Tyvek® accounts for 70% of the wall membrane market in the USA."

"We are committed to continuously developing and presenting new science-based solutions that support sustainable growth, meeting new building codes and European regulations regarding energy efficiency in buildings. Reflective products like Tyvek® Enercor® can make a valuable contribution, working in conjunction with traditional insulation products to minimise heat transfer."

Tyvek® Enercor® is employed as part of the DuPont™ Climate Systems. More information is available on www.tyvekhome.com.
