What are the added benefits I get from a Tyvek® envelope? Why should I buy a Tyvek® envelope versus a paper envelope?

DuPont™ Tyvek® provides superior toughness and durability compared to heavy kraft paper and even other high-strength materials used for envelopes and packaging.  It resists rips, punctures and moisture, providing much more protection for the contents of your envelope.  Tyvek® is also lightweight and can save on postage as well.   Major overnight shippers and the United States Postal Service® choose envelopes made of Tyvek® for priority packaging because it protects important things, ensuring that they arrive in good condition.

What is Tyvek®?

Tyvek® is a nonwoven sheet structure made from very fine high-density polyethylene fibers. These fibers are flashspun, then laid as a web on a moving bed before being bonded together by heat and pressure. The resulting sheet of material is then converted for a multitude of uses in envelopes and packaging, construction, protective garments, medical packaging, graphics, tags and labels. This unique process does not require binders or additives, so Tyvek® can be recycled after its use.

Tyvek® can also be manufactured into custom-sized envelopes for direct mail or to meet special mailing and shipping requirements. Why do Tyvek® envelopes seal so tightly?

Because Tyvek® is extremely tough and durable, it is typically used for high-strength envelopes. The glues or adhesives used by envelope manufacturers are designed to seal tightly and aggressively to match the tear resistance of the Tyvek® material.  However, Tyvek® envelopes are available with both an “Easy Open” feature and re-sealable closure.   There are also Tamper-Evident Tyvek® envelopes that offer an extra measure of security for confidential documents; once the seal is broken, the word “OPENED” appears in the window, reassuring the recipient that the contents have not been compromised.  For more information about the wide variety of Tyvek® envelopes that are available, review Products and Applications or contact us online.

Can Tyvek® envelopes be used on automatic insertion and inkjet addressing/barcoding equipment? Will they need any special equipment for either of these processes?

Yes, Tyvek® envelopes will run on standard insertion and inkjet printing machines, without special equipment.

Automatic Insertion:

Tyvek® envelopes have been tested and will process on standard inserters made by major equipment manufacturers. Results can vary, depending upon machine setup, envelope design, and the basis weight of the Tyvek® used for the envelope.  You should consult your equipment manufacturer’s envelope design specifications to assure that key design parameters (i.e. flap dimensions, flap taper, throat design, enclosure clearance) are considered in the envelope production.  Envelope types are typically open-side booklet or diagonal seam, with remoistenable gum closure.  You may also want to consider using a heavier basis weight Tyvek® substrate (18# vs. 14#) for your envelopes for smoother insertion.

If your customers are hand inserting Tyvek® envelopes with pressure sensitive closures, they could eliminate a very time-intensive process by switching to automatic insertion and water-activated gum closures.

Inkjet Addressing/Barcoding:

Tyvek® envelopes are compatible with many inkjet systems.  In fact, a variety of oil-, solvent-based, and UV cure inks have been developed specifically to print on synthetic materials, like Tyvek®, and provide acceptable inkjet addressing/barcoding on Tyvek® envelopes.  Contact your equipment manufacturer or ink supplier for more information on the inks they offer for synthetic substrates you should contact your equipment manufacturer or ink supplier.

For mailers using water-based inks, line adaptations can provide satisfactory results on most systems.  Some of these modifications may include: draft-mode printing, which requires less ink; extended feed intervals, which provide more time for the ink to dry; supplemental driers; and extended exit.

Can I run Tyvek® Envelopes through a laser printer?

No.  Laser printers operate at higher temperatures that could soften or melt Tyvek®, causing damage to the printer.  Rather than addressing your envelopes directly, run labels through your laser printer, then affix them to the Tyvek® envelopes.

How are Tyvek® envelopes better than ordinary envelopes?

Ordinary envelopes have their place. They also have their limitations.

Tyvek® envelopes are incredibly tough, yet lightweight, and easy to use.  When you have important or propriety information to send, bulky documents, or most anything that fits, you can slip it in a Tyvek® envelope, seal the closure, and rest assured, your mailing will reach its final destination in tact, safe, and secure.  No worries, now fuss, just peace of mind.

Tyvek® also provides benefits in other applications, such as:

Interdepartmental envelopes:  When ordinary paper is used, they  wear out long before their time, but the extended life of Tyvek® Interdepartmental Envelopes makes them more economical. And lightweight.
Tyvek® Expansion Envelopes and Cushioned Envelopes: Tyvek® envelopes  make a cost-effective replacement for heavy shipping boxes and cartons – they also cost less to send.  They are durable enough to send most items through the mail or by express shipping company.  There are padded, or bubble lined, Tyvek® Envelopes available to provide extra protection for the contents you send.
No matter what the size or shape of the contents, your likely to find the Tyvek® envelope that suits your need.  And, when you’re sending something important, something that must arrive safely and on time, regardless of weather or rough handling en route — a legal document, a contract bid, a new business proposal, whatever — there’s just no substitute for a Tyvek® envelope.
