DuPont™ Vertrel® is a very effective brine/coolant to prevent a part or device from overheating. DuPont™ Vertrel® acts in the same way as a radiator in an automobile, providing cooling.
In a brine/coolant application, DuPont™ Vertrel® is enclosed in a heat cycle system. When the Vertrel® comes in contact with parts at high temperatures, it evaporates, cooling the parts. As the Vertrel® moves to the cooler side of the heat exchanger system, it condenses back into liquid state. DuPont™ Vertrel® is used to continuously cool down the parts that could become damaged due to excessive heat.
DuPont™ Vertrel® is used in such applications by chiller manufacturers that are used in Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) modules or power semiconductors that find applications in motors for the Shinkan-sen (bullet trains in Japan) and in the operation of express elevators.
Properties of DuPont™ Vertrel® that make it ideal are:
- Boiling point of about 55°C.
- High latent heat, which allows DuPont™ Vertrel® to carry away large amounts of heat
- Thermal stability, which ensure that DuPont™ Vertrel® does not degrade, giving consistent cooling performance for years
