There are a few main areas in optics where DuPont™ Vertrel® is used extensively:

Cleaning Optical Assemblies

DuPont™ Vertrel® is used to obtain clean and spot-free optical assemblies and lenses. Though lenses and optical assemblies are relatively uncomplicated in shape and have a smooth surface, they can be very tough to clean. The contaminants usually removed are dust, polishing media, and water spots. Another problem commonly encountered is materials compatibility since lenses or their thin coatings are made of plastics.

DuPont™ Vertrel® has great cleaning performance and a broad range of material compatibility, and has emerged as the best choice for manufacturers of lenses and optical assemblies.

Fiber Optics

DuPont™ Vertrel® is used extensively to clean optical fibers to ensure that they are joined properly after being spliced to prevent signal loss. The contaminants are light soils and fingerprints, however the main problem is the small size of the fiber (which can be as small as 8 microns in diameter). Material compatibility is another important issue.

DuPont™ Vertrel® has good cleaning capability and a quick drying property that ensures a clean joining surface and thereby no signal loss due to imperfect joints.

Cleaning Flat Screens

DuPont™ Vertrel® is being used to clean flat screen panels for applications such as plasma TVs. In these applications, DuPont™ Vertrel® is very effective in getting rid of soils such as dust, light oils and fingerprints and leaving behind a contaminant and spot free surface. The cleaning methodology is to use DuPont™ Vertrel® as a saturated wipe.
