Application Description

Range of 2 to 16 W motors for maintenance-free fan and pump duty in refrigeration and other equipment make innovative use of high-performance engineering polymers:

- Stator insulation consists of two snap-fitting parts injection molded from Zytel® nylon resin.

- Vespel® polyimide parts serve as dry journal bearings.

- End bracket/housing parts are injection molded from a new Rynite® PET thermoplastic polyester resin with enhanced thermal conductivity.

Benefits Gained

Longer motor life. Thanks to the heat-dissipating properties of the end bracket/housing parts in thermally conductive Rynite®, the motor windings operate 25°C cooler than with conventional plastic housings. The lower the operating temperature, the longer the life of magnet wire insulation, according to EM&S.

Improved stator insulation. In replacing epoxy encapsulation, the snap-fitting stator parts of Zytel® virtually eliminate rejects related to high-potential testing, and they simplify stator assembly as well.

Durable, maintenance-free bearings. The Vespel® journal bearings require no lubrication, avoiding the need for a complex oil-circulating system.

Lower production costs. This motor has less parts and requires fewer assembly steps than conventional designs for such motors.

Materials Selected and Why

End bracket/housing parts. Rynite® PET, with its excellent thermal conductivity, helps dissipate heat and permits faster mold cycling.

Stator insulation. Zytel® fills needs for high temperature resistance, dielectric properties and ease of molding in a complex thin-wall design.

Bearings. DuPont-fabricated Vespel® bearings meet requirements for low friction and low wear over a broad temperature range.
