DuPont provides an important role in service to the Mid-Ohio Valley.  Some of our outreach projects include:

Partners In Education

Parkersburg High School StudentsDuPont proudly holds the distinction of having supported Parkersburg High School, our Partner In Education, for more than 20 years!   Since 1986, DuPont has provided career and educational guidance with tutoring and mentoring programs meant to enrich the educational experience of achievers of all levels.  The partnership received a Gold Star Excellence Award from the Governor of West Virginia.

Fun With Science

Fun with ScienceSince 1993, Washington Works scientists and engineers have provided the Fun With Science Show for more than 45,000 school children in Wood County, West Virginia and Washington County, Ohio.  With a goal of making science a career of choice, the program demonstrates wet chemistry, polymer science, cryogenics and pyrotechnics in a fun-with-a-purpose way that provides supplemental learning at no charge to the schools.

21st Century Science

"Slime Kids" at workA $1.25 million grant project now underway will result in a hands-on, state-of-the-art science education program for middle and high school students in Wood County, West Virginia public schools.  This project is designed to capitalize on learnings from the Fun With Science show and make chemistry, science, engineering and other scientific disciplines come alive in the classroom.  This project was undertaken in connection with the settlement of an enforcement action taken by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under the "Toxic Substances Control Act and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.”

Ohio River Sweep

For 17 years, DuPont Washington Works has been a major sponsor of the Ohio River Sweep, the largest river clean up project of its kind in the world.  The event, scheduled in June of each year, brings together more than 40,000 volunteers to clean up 981 miles of the Ohio River from the mouth of the river in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the end in Cairo, Illinois.

Community Advisory Panel

DuPont has joined with local industrial neighbors GE, Nova and Kraton Polymers to host a quarterly forum where community members discuss issues of mutual interest.

Wildlife Habitat Enhancement Committee

American Chestnut TreeHundreds of bluebirds now grace the Mid-Ohio Valley due, in large part, to a significant project undertaken by Washington Works volunteers!  More than 70 bluebird boxes have been built, monitored and maintained on the plant site and in the nearby community. This group of volunteers worked with the WV Department of Natural Resources for the reintroduction of the Osprey to the Valley through a project in conjunction with Blennerhassett Island! Another proud project has resulted in a successful experimental plantation of American Chestnut trees on the plant site.  The trees, some of which now measure over 30 feet, will provide data that will be used to establish a blight-resistant strain of the tree back into the American culture.
