The Miracles of Safer Lives…

From DuPont News, April 22, 2005  —

DuPont recently announced the 20 finalists for "The Miracles of Safer Lives" global employee essay invitation. This is one in a series of articles highlighting the essays of the finalists. The winner of the invitation will be announced on June 15th.

Carmen Cortes, Public Affairs specialist, DuPont Iberica, said:

"I got married after ten years of dating my husband and assumed that we knew each other perfectly well. During our first year, many of our challenges resulted from what he called "my safety obsession."

My safety obsession included little details, like the way I placed the knives in the drawer or dishwasher with their sharp sides pointing down or my 'odd habit' of recycling paper, glass and plastics instead of throwing them all together in the same garbage bin. The day I brought home a little stepladder to reach the top of our cupboards, he noted that 'a chair could be used for that purpose and didn't take up so much space.'

The obsession has touched other parts of my life as well: when I asked for a specific safety glass cover for our dining room table, the furniture salesman remarked that this was the first time he had been asked for something 'so special.'

Today, as we are expecting our first child, my husband has been searching for the most reliable cradle in the market and ordered a safety seat for our car. My friends have given us a teddy bear specially designed with no little elements the baby could swallow and my mother purchased plug coverings for our home.

Each day, safety habits have come into our life and have affected our friends and families, thanks to the DuPont safety culture. This is something I'm proud of."
