The Miracles of Safer Lives…

From DuPont News, April 19, 2005  —

DuPont recently announced the 20 finalists for "The Miracles of Safer Lives" global employee essay invitation. This is one in a series of articles highlighting the essays of the finalists. The winner of the invitation will be announced on June 15th.

Joe Rydlewski, technician/analyst, at the DuPont Edge Moor site in Edge Moor, Delaware, said:

"I have worked at DuPont for about 38 years of my life. I worked at other places before I started at DuPont and those brief stints made me appreciate how fortunate I am to have been touched by the DuPont safety philosophy.

At one pre-DuPont stint, I had what could have been a life-altering injury: I almost lost my sight from what was an unsafe act, an unsafe condition, and not having the proper personal protective equipment, that resulted in a chemical splashing into my eyes.

So how has the DuPont safety philosophy affect my life? It is like going from the dark into the light. Every day of my life, from the time I get out of bed, until I retire for the evening, I'm affected. No matter what I'm doing, whether it be driving to work, cutting the lawn, lifting a heavy object, shoveling snow, swimming in the pool, riding my bike, or playing with my grandchildren, I'm affected. To say how, would be like telling you how I breathe. When you work for DuPont, safety becomes a part your lifestyle, part of your life, and part of your being.

The thing we must remember is that safety starts with me. If we can do that, half the battle is won."
