The Miracles of Safer Lives…

From DuPont News, April 12, 2005  —

DuPont recently announced the 20 finalists for "The Miracles of Safer Lives" global employee essay invitation. This is one in a series of articles highlighting the essays of the finalists. The winner of the invitation will be announced on June 15th.

Rita Fenyvesi, marketing and sales assistant, DuPont Personal Protection and Life Protection, Hungary, said:

"Our family is a DuPont family; my husband and I have been DuPont employees for more than ten years. We have a six–year–old son, Adam and when he began talking, his first English word was 'safety'. He learned this word very early and understood and practiced the meaning of it by using his safety belt, his bicycle helmet and other safety measures that have become second nature for him.

At DuPont, we have safety knowledge that my husband and I are eager to share with our relatives, neighbors, and friends. It is interesting that during the years we became kind of 'volunteer safety trainers.' Various topics we have discussed include: using or not using winter tires, the importance of safety belts, use of airbags, proper use of mobile phones, and wearing protective clothing for different work.

At DuPont following safety rules and guidelines is a condition of employment. But it's a tough job when you try to convince your neighbor to use his safety belt while driving his car. You may ask – why do we waste our energy on convincing somebody to be safe? Isn't it his business? No, it isn't. As DuPont employees, we feel this is our job. It is not enough that we take care of our family or ourselves. We have to take care of each other, have to listen to each other, and speak up and react when we feel it is necessary. The development of a safety culture is in our hands: the goal is zero."
