At DuPont our scientists concentrate a great deal of effort on the development of bio-based products, materials, and fuels. Reducing our dependence on fossil fuels is a mission we take very seriously — and bio-based products are mission-critical. Simply put, the more renewably-sourced, plant-based material in a product or fuel, the less petroleum-based material. Every reduction in fossil fuel consumption is a step in the right direction.
More Sustainable Products With No Compromise on Performance or Economics
From high-yield seeds that require less water to more efficient refineries to the final bio-based products, DuPont is committed to making each stage of the bio-based product lifecycle as environmentally smart and commercially viable as possible.
A Polymer with a Lighter Environmental Footprint
Renewably Sourced™ DuPont™ Sorona® is one of our scientists’ proudest innovations. Sorona® contains 37% renewably sourced, plant-based content by weight so products and materials fabricated from Sorona®, rather than traditional polymers, contain a smaller percentage of petro-chemical-derived material, thus helping reduce our dependence on oil. But that’s not the only reason why Sorona® is a more sustainable polymer. The production of Sorona® consumes less fossil fuel energy and emits fewer greenhouse gases than the manufacture of an equivalent amount of nylon 6 or nylon 6,6. Sorona® is easier on the environment in several different ways.
Performance to Dye For
This innovative material presents brands and designers with a wealth of new possibilities because, while Sorona® is clearly a more sustainable option versus petroleum-based materials, it is also a performance dynamo. Sorona® holds color fast for bolder, more vibrant textiles. Other polymers treat stain resistance like an afterthought, applying a spray-on topical treatment post-manufacture. Sorona® has stain resistance directly in its innovative, patented molecular structure - so carpet made with Sorona® is stain-resistant for life. Sorona® can stand on its own, but it also blends beautifully with other fibers both natural and man-made. It has both the softness of polyester and the resiliency of nylon. Sorona® means designers, carpet mills, apparel brands, and consumers can make more environmentally friendly choices without sacrificing performance.
